Volunteers needed for Wreaths Across America Day for St. George
An effort in St. George to place wreaths on veterans' graves throughout town continues to grow, and organizers are asking for help this Dec. 13 to accomplish the goal.
In 2023, a group of St George volunteers led by Dan MacCaffray and American Legion Post 34 Tenants Harbor partnered with Wreaths Across America and placed wreaths on 200 Veterans’ graves in two North Parish Cemeteries at Wiley’s Corner.
In 2024, this effort was expanded to place wreaths on 650 veterans’ graves in all five St George cemeteries.
The St. George cemeteries are steeped in history with graves dating back to the Revolutionary War and every U.S. military campaign since.
Last year, the introduction of the Maine Army National Guard Color Guard added a level of military pageantry and precision drill not often seen in Midcoast Maine. Wreaths Across America Day, St George, is driven by volunteers who unite to honor the fallen, remember those who served in uniform and let families know that a veteran will never be forgotten.
This St George community event continues to grow each year.
It all starts by joining the volunteers at one of the ceremonies listed below. They encourage your participation by placing wreaths on Veterans’ graves, but more importantly, solemnly celebrating lives of selfless service to the United States. This is a day when St George will stand up and be counted with thousands of other communities across our country.
On Dec. 13, plan to be at:
• Wiley’s Corner Baptist Church at 11 a.m. for the two Wiley’s Corner Cemeteries. Contact Sandra Hall (sahcdm@gmail.com ) if you are interested in placing wreaths at Wiley’s Corner.
• Tenants Harbor Baptist Church, 12:30 p.m., for the Seaside, Ridge and Clark Hill cemeteries. Contact Bill Torpey (William.t.torpey@gmail.com) if you are interested in placing wreaths at Seaside, Ridge or Clark Hill cemeteries.
They thank the community for its commitment in honoring St. George veterans.
